MIRROR/TARKOVSKY [ A REDOX ] UP ON PSYCHO HOLOSUITE'S YOUTUBE PAGE
A videowork I helped voice + assemble is up on Psycho Holosuite's YouTube page today. YOU CAN VIEW IT'S FULL HOUR AND 48 MINUTES HERE. It's a symbolist collage redoxxing of Soviet masterpiece MIRROR [1975; directed by Andrei Tarkovsky]. Thank you to Oli Johns for asking me to collaborate on this, teaching me how to fade in/fade out, fixing the instances in which I fucked up the fade ins/fade outs, encouraging me to write subtitles, forgiving me when I hung him out to dry by failing to attempt a proper Russian accent, and letting me whisper about Faust. I also hold Oli partially responsible for the fact that I've just purchased a copy of Tarkovsky's diaries. Wtf is this? Using the original MIRROR as a foundation thread throughout, Oli and I basically reinterpreted, replaced, re-poeticized, re-symbolized, reterritorialized, renovated, messed up, muddied, mutated, subtitled Tarkovsky's MIRROR into a new MIRROR. Mostly we used only Soviet films for the inserted content. Let's be honest, this was Oli's idea and he'd already redoxxed like 60% of the MIRROR MIRROR before I even got a chance to watch Tarkovsky's original film. Other fun facts: my lentil voices Ignat + joins me in chanting "X marks the spot" and managed to out-voice-act Oli and I both, usually in a single take; Oli and I simultaneously realized the Baba Yaga/chicken scene needed whispering and puppets from thousands of miles apart, proving once and for all the existence of quantum entanglement; lead actress of Tarkovsky's MIRROR (and, consequently, also this MIRROR) Margarita Terekhova is mesmerizing, atomic, the stuff diamonds are made of, a vessel of cosmic fire, and you're going to want to watch everything she's ever been in; and AELITA (1924) is my favorite of the films we used as collage material.
